Finding Your Perfect Yoga Practice

Keep in mind that, when you practice yoga, you’re not practicing to perfect yourself. You are already perfect. The practice is there to help you know that.

What Is The Perfect Yoga Practice?

Is there a perfect way to practice yoga?

Length of practice - 15 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes?

Being super flexible and pretzel-y?

Inspiring quotes, beautiful locations, and challenging poses?

No pain, no gain.

In reality, none of these are accurate. While social media gives us prime examples of all of the above, I mean, even this site has quotes and photos on location, these are not what it takes to have a ‘perfect’ practice.

An actual ‘perfect’ practice is a yoga practice that is beneficial, supportive, accessible, and personalized to each of us. The challenge is finding this for ourselves.

How Do You Achieve a Perfect Yoga Practice?

Achieving your perfect practice is actually easier than you may think, though it does have its challenges.

The biggest challenge is usually related to comparing ourselves and our practice to others or even ourselves at other times in our lives. These can be a significant roadblock to reaping the benefits of a consistent, personalized yoga practice.

We tend to get in our own way.

Once we take a step back and reflect on these hurdles we can face these challenges head on and take the next step (big or small) on our journey to wellness. This next step? Learning to use props and choose pose variations that are supportive and accessible for YOU.

Your Perfect Yoga Practice

Props can be amazing tools to make YOUR yoga practice perfect for YOU. They can be props specific to a yoga practice - mat, blocks, strap, bolster - or they can be household items - towel, stack of books, belt, pillow. All of these are designed to make various poses more accessible and learning to use them can be a huge benefit for personal practice.

Yoga is also more than twisting and stretching. Pranayama (breathing practices) and meditation are equally important to a yoga practice. These do not require any equipment at all nor do they have to take a long time. They can be done any where and any time and in almost any situation, basically, as needed.

Not certain how to practice breathing?! We just breathe, no thought necessary, right? Not necessarily.

Simply bringing awareness to your normal breathing is a breathing practice and can be very meditative and relaxing. A guided breathing practice can be beneficial in stress and pain management. It can also get us into a mental and physical space that makes meditation easier. Turning our thoughts inward can re-establish aspects of the mind-body connection which is supported by our more physical asana practice.

Finding the unique combination of meditation, breathing practices, and movement is ultimately what it takes to find YOUR perfect practice.
